Effect of Distance Errors: Applications to Sdss Early-type Galaxies
نویسندگان
چکیده
Noisy distance estimates associated with photometric rather than spectroscopic redshifts lead to a mis-estimate of the luminosities, and produce a correlated mis-estimate of the sizes. We consider a sample of early-type galaxies from the SDSS DR6 and apply the generalization of the Vmax method to correct for these biases. We show that our technique recovers the true redshift, magnitude and size distributions, as well as the true size-luminosity relation. Regardless the specific application outlined here, our method impacts a broader range of studies, when at least one distance-dependent quantity is involved.

The Σ − L Correlation in Nearby Early-type Galaxies
Early-type galaxy velocity dispersions and luminosities are correlated. The correlation estimated in local samples (≤ 100 Mpc) differs from that measured more recently in the SDSS. We show that this is also true for the ENEAR sample if galaxy luminosities are estimated using distances which have been corrected for peculiar motions. We then show that, because the estimate of the ‘true’ distance ...
متن کاملThe Connection between Star-forming Galaxies, Agn Host Galaxies and Early-type Galaxies in the Sdss
We present a study of the connection between star-forming galaxies, AGN host galaxies, and normal early-type galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Using the SDSS DR5 and DR4plus data, we select our early-type galaxy sample in the color versus color-gradient space, and we classify the spectral types of the selected early-type galaxies into normal, star-forming, Seyfert, and LINER clas...

متن کاملBackground sky obscuration by cluster galaxies as a source of systematic error for weak lensing
Lensing magnification and stacked shear measurements of galaxy clusters rely on measuring the density of background galaxies behind the clusters. The most common ways of measuring this quantity ignore the fact that some fraction of the sky is obscured by the cluster galaxies themselves, reducing the area in which background galaxies can be observed. We discuss the size of this effect in the Slo...
متن کاملPrecision Measurements of Higher-Order Angular Galaxy Correlations Using 11 Million SDSS Galaxies
We present estimates of the N-point galaxy area-averaged angular correlation functions ω̄N(θ) for N = 2,...,7 from the third data release of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The sample was selected from galaxies with 18 ≤ r < 21, and is the largest ever used to study higher-order correlations. The measured ω̄N(θ) are used to calculate the projected, sN , and real space, SN , hierarchical ampl...
